“Welcome to Show Me Your News, your weekly weekend podcasting source recapping the latest news in anticipation of Super Smash Brothers Brawl.”

“Welcome to Show Me Your News, the pinnacle for delivering and debating the gaming news that matters the most to you! Rumor-filled gossip, hardware blunders, or upcoming releases – if it relates to video games, we want to talk about it!”

“Welcome to the experience that delivers the latest news and gossip that matters the most to you! It’s the Show Me Your News Network.”

Show Me Your News has always been an evolving entity, from the rough-and-tumble days of Youko and the Rundown to the debating opinions between SamuraiPanda and… just about anyone. We’ve had our down times, our ruts, and our shining moments of glory. We have broadcasted to thousands of fans and have even become an integral part in the lives of tens. As we stand today, SMYN has informed, inspired, and above all, continued in the face of our varying ups and downs.

You’ve heard our voices, seen our faces, laughed at our bad ideas and stood with us as we’ve shared our hopes and dreams, on air, with all of you. We may have produced a mere podcast here at Show Me Your News, but you all have given us so much more. A community. A NETWORK.

And so, Show Me Your News evolves once more, not to video podcasting (no, I think we’ve learned our lesson on that one), but as so much more than just one single entity. We’ve teased it before, we’ve left you clues, but now it’s time to publicly introduce our concept for the Show Me Your News Network.

I have to preface this by saying that this is part of a much bigger picture that we hope to reveal as staff in the very near future. To be a part of this community now will prove to be very rewarding when that time comes. Now is as good a time as ever to be a SMYNja.

I mentioned last night was the “end of an era” for SMYN, as it were. That is, it was the last episode with all of its sections intact and enclosed in one podcast. In two weeks, we will have our E3 call-in show. Two weeks after that will be the post-E3 show. However, the week after that (say June 16th-ish) will bring about a new shift.

Show Me Your News is not going away as a podcast, but instead being re-purposed in a way. Some listeners do enjoy the 150-minute length, but it really turns a lot of new listeners off. If this community is going to grow again, a line has to be drawn, or we risk losing it for good. Therefore, SMYN will remain a bi-weekly podcast that specifically covers the latest video game news – ideally with the Headlines, Out Recently, Soapbox, and Thought segments. As a result, the show will be leaner and hopefully will target about a 90-minute length.

However, a new podcast will rise as a result of this from the SMYN team, called Wut R U Playn? (WRUP). These will take place during SMYN’s off-weeks, will be more flexible in terms of hosts, and will be more relaxed and tangential, yet with that air of professionalism we like to maintain. Episodes will include the Wut R U Playn section from SMYN, with no restrictions on length to move on with the rest of the show, and will bring back Mailtime, along with Quotable Quotes and YouTube Recommendations. I don’t like calling it a “spin-off” show, because nothing has really changed as far as content goes. It’s the same direction, just on a different week. Again, estimated duration for this should be about 90 minutes as well.

Rationally, nothing is being lost here. We are not cutting any segments – in fact we’ll be gaining Mailtime once again. As part of the SMYN team, we are now delivering weekly content, instead of having a down week, yet we are keeping things intact. With these estimations, you are getting approximately an hour and a half of content every week, as opposed to two and a half hours every two weeks. Please feel free to comment about this change in this thread, remember that nothing is perfectly set in stone, and it won’t even be happening until after E3 is over. However, the most important thing to consider is that THIS IS PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER…

Last night in our Skype chat, some fans expressed some concerns which I might as well tackle here:

– “What is going to happen with guests? Would they feel cheated for being on ‘half’ a podcast?”
This is an interesting question, but it does have various ways of being solved. If we do land “big-name” guests again, I would rather have them be on WRUP, which is more conducive to asking what they’ve been doing lately in the video game world, plus the hosts and fans get to interview them in Mailtime. For SMYNjas who have wanted to be guests for a long time now though, having them on consecutive WRUP and SMYN episodes is certainly not out of the question, if scheduling allows for it. These two podcasts will still work very closely together, but will achieve different purposes in essentially different parts.

– “Isn’t WRUP infringing on what Read the Manual already does?”
Not really. WRUP is more for video gaming and the more fan-centric side of the SMYN community with Mailtime. Read the Manual does a great job covering all sorts of topics, from TV, to music, to anime, and even video games. Similarities can be drawn, I suppose, but I believe the differences are certainly very distinct.

– “Wut R U Playn is a useless segment anyway, so it doesn’t deserve its own podcast.”
Not necessarily true. The segment on the show not only is a great marker for listening to old episodes, where we were in our gaming histories, but there’s nothing really wrong about hearing about old games. I personally see a lot of value in hearing about these kinds of games, so that I may be swayed enough to add it to my backlog. Also, hearing that I’ve convinced people to play games such as Persona or Mass Effect and they’ve really enjoyed them is very rewarding to me. I would rather not rob anyone else of that experience, to learn something new about past video games. If that lacks value for you, I’m sorry. But with a podcast based on this, we get to maximize the potential of this kind of information to most of our listeners, who do care.

– “What about new game releases? Those are still pretty important!”
Out Recently will still be covered in Show Me Your News. If we have anyone who has played the game on that episode, we will certainly discuss it there, if it is not big enough to make a headline. Of course, guests are still welcome to discuss the new games they have been playing in WRUP.

– “Youko is now doing weekly work, which I think is crazy.”
Yeah, perhaps. I’ve handled the work transition pretty well so far and I hope to do so with more efficiency in the future. If things get too overwhelming though, I can certainly back off of WRUP, if need be. That show will have more flexibility, in terms of hosts, anyway. Also, editing audio is not that time-consuming for me, as long as it has been recorded well.

– “The entire SMYN thing needs to either reformat completely, or go on an undetermined hiatus.”
Here’s the problem, though. By reformatting SMYN, you LOSE THINGS in the process. This trims up SMYN to a leaner format, keeps everything else in WRUP, and even adds Mailtime back again. Also, an undetermined hiatus solves absolutely nothing. In five years, the only distinct hiatus we’ve had was the burnout from the video podcast. In fact, burnout should be the only reason for a hiatus, not to “preserve things.” Or do we all not remember what happened the last time we unintentionally gave the impression that we had dropped off the face of the earth (hint: three letters)?

– “The podcast will fall apart in this format. You are going to ruin its name because of this.”
This does not make any sense to me at all. Refining things, providing more content, and not losing any segments in the process sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Show Me Your News was a podcast ONLY ABOUT BRAWL at one point. And then we changed ENTIRELY to a general gaming podcast. Think about that for a second! MLG may have “ruined our name” by making it seem like we had stopped entirely, but getting better at what we do will not “ruin our name.” In fact, I can PROMISE you that with the bigger-picture plans we have in store, the SMYN brand is going to carry quite a bit of weight.

– “What will happen once Smash 4 news comes back?”
Why, look at that! Refining what the Show Me Your News podcast does only allows for greater flexibility once that happens. That, and we have that distinct name and brand for Smash fans to come back to.

This is just the beginning of something with great potential. I look forward to hearing your responses, both positive and negative, so that we can tailor an experience for both long-time SMYNjas and brand new listeners.

Hello, fans of Show Me Your News! As announced on Episode 110, we are holding a E3-themed contest that has a very simple premise!

THE CONCEPT

– You will be asked 50 questions regarding what may or may not occur at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. These are questions that will be definitively answered “YES” or “NO” by the time the expo comes to a close.
– All you have to do is answer each question with “YES” or “NO,” as well as answer the tiebreaker question with a number.
– The hosts will reveal their answers on Episode 111 of SMYN, which we plan on (tentatively speaking) setting up as a live call-in show, a la talk radio.
– The fan with the highest percentage of answers correct, as determined by the hosts at the end of E3, will be asked to be a guest on the post-E3 episode of Show Me Your News.

THE RULES

– You must submit your answers IN THIS THREAD for them to be valid. While this may seem like a draw to make fans register at our amazing community, it is also a method to ensure fair play, as it may be seen if you have edited your post (and your answers). It is simply a way to make sure cheating does not occur. And it makes it much easier for Buzz and I to collect all the submissions and grade them after E3 ends.
– In order to be a guest on SMYN, you will need a working computer microphone and have no qualms (parental, etc.) with having a Skype chat with us. This does not mean you cannot enter the contest, but if you win and are not able to be a guest for either of these reasons, we will have to consider the fan with the next highest score.
– Submissions must be entered before we go live for Episode 111 of SMYN. This will occur likely around Saturday, May 26th. Therefore, the sooner you submit your answers, the better chance you have of the deadline not passing you by. However, once you submit your entry, those are the answers we will stick with for your official submissions. Any edits that you make will be disregarded, as we will be able to view what you first typed in. Therefore, before submitting here, feel free to DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS WITH OTHER FANS in this thread HERE.

So with that, let’s reveal the questions involved and see who is blessed with an eye towards the future, after the jump!

Hey, Youko here, and I suppose it’s time for an update on all things Show Me Your News! My semester is wrapping up and honestly, as I sit here completely disheveled, it couldn’t come soon enough. I’ve been writing academic papers like it’s my job – I mean, we’re talking about 50 pages worth in a little more than a week. But you didn’t come here to read those. So let’s cover some important points of business.

First of all, some of you may have noticed that parts of our site are on the fritz. We recently went through a server move to a much more secure location, mostly to get rid of those hacking attacks we were facing. While our forums are blazingly fast now and working like a dream, the move came at a bit of a cost. Before the move began, when loading the page for our podcast episodes, we essentially got a loading stall when the page was trying to call the content. After the server move, the problem still persists and we’re not seeing any indication why this would be the case. As such, the WordPress parts of our website are pretty vacant, but the content is backed up. If we have to, heaven forbid, restart our WordPress feed and the iTunes link is broken in the process, we will let you know as soon as possible. We thought this fix would occur sooner than later, which actually explains our next problem.

You probably have noticed that we have not uploaded Episode 99 from November 5th, as well as the Zeldacast from November 17th, and these problems are actually the reason why. See, when I returned from Youmacon, with the episode ready to go, we were hacked. For a second time. And after that, the WordPress content would not load. As such, I have not had an opportunity to reliably and safely upload these files for public distribution. I wanted their first release to be over our iTunes feed, but with the state we are in, at the moment, waiting for that seems foolish. So, I have uploaded both files on my public Dropbox folder and they will remain there until we fix our website issues. I apologize for any frustration felt in this process, but I hope it assures you that the annoyance regarding the technical difficulties has been tenfold on our part.

Episode 99 (11/05) – The Darkest Episode
SMYN Special (11/17) – Zeldacast

This means we don’t stop making content, though, and this is important because for these next couple projects, we need your help! Episode 100 of Show Me Your News is upon us and as it has previously been stated, it will act as a sort of primer for those who have never listened before. As a community, we are listening to old episodes, picking out classic moments that last about minute in length, and then I will assemble an episode that compiles all of those. It will be a sort of show history, if you will, and it’s amazing to consider what’s been done over these four and a half years. We have almost two gigabytes of audio left to listen to, so in order to help speed up the process, visit this link and help us coordinate efforts on our forums. I also have a Dropbox folder with each remaining episode, so if you want in on that for download purposes, let me know and I’ll add you to it. After all, no other episode is planned until we complete Episode 100, so let’s get moving on that.

Similarly, your assistance is also requested for the Show Me Your News Game of the Year 2011 awards! Yes, we did a full-blown production last year, and it’s only getting bigger this year. Currently, we are in the stages of deciding finalists, so you only have a couple more days to stop by this link and private message Master of Fossils which games should make the three finalists from each category. On December 9th, winner voting begins and you’ll message Master of Fossils again, this time with one winner from each category. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the thread. Also, the production of the show takes a lot of work, so we’re looking to involve your input. Send us a message if you have an idea for a comedic bit or if you’d like to see something return from last year. The more ideas, the merrier, as we try to craft an awards show that represents the fandom of Show Me Your News!

Of course, SwordHunter and I are still trucking away over at our bottomfive YouTube channel for WTF, Pokémon! It really is interesting to take a look at the Orange Islands episodes, that’s for sure. We’ve been doing livestreams of recordings on Thursday nights at 7:30 PM ET, at http://livestream.com/showmeyournews, but that time will actually be changing with the start of the new semester in January. Again, when we know the details, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.

And I think that just about does it. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer. Until next time, thanks for your time, and that’s all from me.

SOPA

Okay, so I’m technically not allowed to post to the front page, so Youko or Buzz is probably going to be annoyed with me, but I think that this is incredibly important. So Youko, Buzz, I’m sorry, and I know very well I’m stepping over the line of what I can actually do. But I think this needs to be done.

Now, as a representative for the SMYN Staff, I usually don’t want to try to push a political agenda on you guys. The hosts are here to deliver the podcast and other awesome services, and the staff is here to make sure the community is as great as can be. It’s not our place to tell you what you should think about controversial issues like ‘How we can fix the US economy’ or ‘Is the president doing a good job’. It’s not our focus, so we tend to stay neutral.

But this is an issue that affects us pretty hard, and no one actually thinks is a good idea: the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). I don’t need to tell you everything about this bill; chances are you already know. But it’s a very scary thing, because it can destroy a lot of things online that we all love, including our own WTF Pokémon.

Keeping that in mind, this video is probably the most important video you will ever see about SOPA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYgIvKsc

SOPA is dangerous, unethical, draconian, and very, very real. This bill is so potentially harmful that the people responsible for it are either malicious or incompetent, and I don’t want either of those kinds of people writing our laws.

There are two things you can do:
1. Spread that video around. It reveals a lot of very important things about SOPA that need to become public.
2. Go to http://fightforthefuture.org/ Through this website, you can contact your local representative and tell them how terrible this bill is. A lot of politicians are in favor of this bill, but a lot of those same politicians are also fairly on the fence. Letting them know how we feel as the people they are representing is the most important thing we can do.

And that’s my sopabox for the day.

SwordHunter and I will wrap up the night with our livestreaming roots – playing Super Smash Bros Melee friendlies!

A few things…
– I’m sorry for not including any PC games (TF2, Tank Ball, etc), but with our livestream setups, PC streaming results in dropped frames and not too much of a fun time for all.
– As far the VS series goes, we would be streaming the online lobby. Which, you guessed it, means a lot of NOTHING and WAITING going on. Blame Capcom for not bringing that spectating patch to MvC3 yet.
– As much as I’d like to stream some of my favorite TV shows, I think that’s best reserved for another day…I don’t want to potentially risk the account on this day, you know?
– I didn’t want to take up time by playing new games because I wouldn’t get too far, as I wouldn’t know what I’m doing. You can see that all the games I’ll be playing, I’ve played extensively.
– Really, guys? A Ponies debate? REALLY?
– There may or may not be egg drinking and/or drunkenness.

Of course, this all goes down at livestream.com/smyn – I will be RELYING on your interactions and contributions! Also, I will be tweeting @showmeyournews when a new activity is starting.

It may be crazy that I’m doing this, but for you guys, it’s all worth it.

Four years ago today, the first episode of what became known as “Show Me Your News!” was released to the public.

And I couldn’t be happier. Thank you, everyone, for making this journey so special. May it grow even larger in the future!

I would have done something to celebrate today, but you know…the real world happened. I work during the next several days. However, I have a day off on Monday, so I’ll probably stream for the whole day when I am awake in celebration of the great occasion.

In the meanwhile, your congratulations and adulation is welcome, if you are willing to give it.

Also, I had this ready for today. By coincidence, I swear.
